Hydration Strategies for Optimal Performance
Water is essential for virtually every physiological process in the body. During exercise, proper hydration becomes even more critical for performance and recovery.
How Dehydration Affects Performance
Research shows that losing just 2% of body weight through sweat can lead to:
- Decreased strength and power output
- Reduced endurance capacity
- Impaired thermoregulation (overheating)
- Slower reaction times and decision-making
- Increased perceived exertion
Daily Hydration Guidelines
A general recommendation is 30-35ml of water per kilogram of body weight. For a 70kg individual, this equals 2.1-2.45 liters per day. Increase this amount based on:
- Training intensity and duration
- Environmental temperature and humidity
- Individual sweat rate
- Caffeine and alcohol consumption
Hydration Timing
Drink 400-600ml of water 2-3 hours before training. During exercise lasting over 60 minutes, consume 150-250ml every 15-20 minutes. Post-workout, drink 1.5 liters for every kilogram of body weight lost through sweat.
Electrolyte Considerations
For sessions exceeding 90 minutes or in hot conditions, consider adding electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) to maintain fluid balance and prevent cramping.
