Mobility Work: Why Flexibility Matters for Strength

Mobility training is often overlooked in favor of strength and cardio work, but it’s a critical component of long-term fitness success and injury prevention.
Mobility vs. Flexibility
While flexibility refers to the passive range of motion in a joint, mobility is the ability to actively control that range. Both are important, but mobility has more direct carryover to strength training performance.
Benefits of Mobility Training
- Improved exercise technique and muscle activation
- Reduced risk of injury during training
- Better recovery between training sessions
- Enhanced athletic performance
- Reduced muscle soreness and stiffness
Implementing Mobility Work
Dedicate 10-15 minutes before training to dynamic mobility drills targeting the joints you’ll use. Focus on:
- Hip circles and leg swings for lower body days
- Arm circles and band pull-aparts for upper body days
- Cat-cow stretches and thoracic rotations for all sessions
- Ankle mobility drills before squatting movements
Post-Workout Flexibility
After training, spend 5-10 minutes on static stretching. Hold each stretch for 30-60 seconds, focusing on muscles worked during the session.
